What is relaxing jazz music?

“Relaxing jazz” is less a genre than a mood: the soft, slow, late-evening side of jazz. Here is where it comes from, and where jazz-influenced lofi like Purrple Cat fits.

The quiet side of jazz

Jazz has always had a hushed corner. Cool jazz in the 1950s turned the volume and tempo down, with airy horns and gentle rhythm sections. Bossa nova brought a soft, swaying guitar and near-whispered melodies. Ballads, played slowly with brushes on the snare, became the music of late bars and long drives.

What makes it relaxing

Jazz kissa: rooms for listening

In Japan, the jazz kissa (jazz café) became a place to sit with a coffee and listen to records on a very good sound system, often with a house rule to keep conversation low. This site borrows that idea: shelves, a request slip and a record on the stand.

Where lofi comes in

Lofi hip hop grew out of producers sampling and imitating that mellow jazz sound: dusty chords, laid-back drums, a little tape warmth. Purrple Cat writes original lofi in that tradition. It is not a live jazz band and doesn’t sample jazz records, but its harmony leans jazzy, which is what the chord colour score on each record measures.

How to listen

Keep it low, let a shelf play through, and pair it with something slow: reading, cooking, a rainy window. Every track here is free to use with credit on social media and in livestreams.
